Formed in Croatia, GIIPUJA is a dynamic ensemble led by double-bassist and composer Damjan Grbac, with its lineup including violin, bass-clarinet, drums and regional traditional instruments. Their name translates roughly to “Music of Istra and the Croatian Littoral in Jazz Arrangements.” Since 2013, GIIPUJA has been blending the rhythms and scales of Istria’s folk heritage with contemporary jazz language—featuring both original compositions and reinterpretations of local tunes. The eclectic instrumentation and absence of typical harmonic layers give their sound a rare and original character: sometimes intense and dissonant with narrow Istrian-scale intervals, at other times joyous and rhythmically compelling. With numerous performances across Croatia and appearances at international festivals (including in Budapest and Milan), GIIPUJA offers a concert experience where tradition meets innovation, and folk-roots merge with jazz freedom.
