LIS WESSBERG

“WHERE SOUND, SILENCE AND SOUL BECOME ONE”

Lis Wessberg is one of Denmark’s most distinctive jazz trombonists and composers, known for her warm, expressive tone, lyrical phrasing and atmospheric musical universe.

Her music moves between Nordic jazz, contemporary songwriting and cinematic soundscapes. With a strong sense of melody, space and sonic detail, she creates music that is both intimate and expansive, leaving room for improvisation, interaction and emotional depth.

Wessberg has released three albums as a bandleader on April Records. Her latest album, In The Wake of Blue, was released in April 2026 and features vocalist Veronika Rud alongside Wessberg’s quartet, with string arrangements performed by LiveStrings on selected tracks. Combining instrumental compositions and songs, the album explores nature, impermanence, love and transformation.

Lineup

Lis Wessberg - Trombone
Steen Rasmussen - Piano, Wurlitzer, and Keys
Jesper Thorn - Bass
Jeppe Gram - Drums

With the trombone as the thematic instrument, Lis Wessberg's band, Yellow Map, stands out as a unique voice on the Danish jazz scene.

Trombonist Lis Wessberg released the critically acclaimed album Yellow Map on April Records in the fall of 2021. In 2023, the band returned to the studio to record their second album, Twain Walking. The music from both releases will be presented live at concerts in and outside Denmark in 2025 and 2026.

The band consists of some of the most prominent musicians on the Danish jazz scene: pianist Steen Rasmussen, bassist Lennart Ginman, and drummer Jeppe Gram.

Yellow Map is cinematic and transformative music, exuding equal parts of jazz giants like Miles Davis and Chet Baker and the dreamy, explorative atmospheres of bands like Radiohead and Talk Talk.

Carte Blanche

"Heading to Denmark for this new Carte Blanche with musician Lis Wessberg – trombonist, quietly radiant composer, and a distinctive voice on the contemporary Scandinavian jazz scene. Her latest album, In the Wake of Blue, her most personal work to date, is still fresh off the press.

One hour inside her mind, her sounds, and her blue"

The Jazz World (UK) - May 2026
Farell Aubre

" The music continues subtle evolution even at its softest dynamic levels. The result is a contemporary jazz record that stays warm, spacious, and quietly kinetic from beginning to end"
